James Blair & Mary (Colbert?)

Conventional Research
The James Blair - Mary (Colbert?) line is the most researched BSGR line. 48 past and present members are researching this line. The (?) associated with Mary's last name is because no one knows for certain exactly who James married. In fact, much about this line is unknown, unproven or not documented. It is believed that James and Mary had two sons, Colbert and James. It is also possible that James had a third son, John, by a second wife.

DNA Testing
Ten participants believe they descend from James Blair - Mary (Colbert?)

Eight of them descend through Colbert Blair and Sarah Morgan. Four of the eight (#75036, #83525, #129038, #140666) descend through Colbert's son James, one (#5674) descends through Colbert's son John and three (#14934, #161502, #227557) descend through Colbert's son Enos.

Two of the participants (#129038 and #140666) descend through James Blair and Ann Hays.

25 Markers
All participants tested at least 25 markers. The number of mismatches each had with others is shown in the following table:

25 Marker Mismatches

37 Markers
Seven participants tested at 37 markers. The number of mismatches each had with others is shown in the following table:

37 Marker Mismatches

Haplogroups
Participant #5674 is haplogroup Q. Participants #14934, #161502 and #227557 are haplogroup E1b1b1. Participants #75036, #83525, #129038, #140666, #249887, and #140666 are all haplogroup R1b1b2.

The actual marker values for each participant are shown in the table below.

The diagram below show the pedigrees of the participants based on conventional research.

James Blair and Mary Colbert

The DNA test results show that these 10 participants fall into three distinct groups:

Participant #5674 stands alone. He his closes match in the Blair DNA project is 17 for 25 meaning he is NOT related to anyone in the project. He is the only participant in the project with haplogroup Q.

Participants #14934, #161502, and #277577 (purple in the above diagram) are grouped together as UGM10. They match each other 25/25 and the two who have tested 37 markers match 37/37. UGM10's closes matches to others in the project are 17 for 25 and 17 for 37. They are the only participants in the project with haplogroup E1b1b1. These three participants are clearly related to each other but not related to anyone else in the project.

Participants #75036, #83525, #129038, #140666, #249887, and #140666 (yellow in the above diagram) are grouped together are UGM07. They match each other on at least 24/25 and the five who have tested 37 markers match at least 35/37. UGM07's closes matches to others in the project are 21 for 25 and 27 for 37. These six participants are clearly related to each other but not related to anyone else in the project.

Conclusions
DNA test results are both conclusive and yet inconclusive. On one hand the 3 distinct lines back to Colbert Blair and Sarah Morgan are clearly NOT related. They have 3 distinct 25-marker signatures and 3 distinct haplogroups that clearly show that these three lines do not share a common ancestor.

One the other hand, the four descendants of James Blair and Margaret Sudderth, are almost certainly related. Not only do they match each other exactly, but they do not match anyone else in the project. Likewise the three participants who descend from Enos Blair and Hannah Millikan are almost certainly related as they all match 25/25 and two match 37/37.

Unfortunately there is no way to know for certain which of these four lines actually descends from Colbert Blair and Sarah Morgan.

The line back to James Blair and Ann Hays is fairly clear. We have two participants who descend from this line who match 24/25. If James and Ann had other sons besides James in would help if we could test their descendants.

Although we have no way of knowing for certain, the current test results seem to indicate that the UGM07 group are the descendants of James Blair and Mary (Colbert?) . We have four participants in this group that descend from James and Mary's grandson James and two who descend from their son James.
